In the eyes of the law, you’re still a child, and you must remain in school till the age of 18. You can work, but because of your age, there are strict rules and regulations. How Many Hours Can A 15-Year-Old Work?

How many hours can a 15-year-old work is surprisingly flexible. However, because you must remain in school while you’re working, there are some rules you and your employer must appreciate and follow.

During term time, you can only work a maximum of 12 hours a week. You can work a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays. On Saturdays, you can work for a maximum of 8 hours. However, you are not allowed to work before 7 am and after 7 pm, and you cannot work during school hours, sorry!

During the school holidays, you can work a maximum of 35 hours a week. This is divided into 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays. You are only allowed to work a maximum of 2 hours on Sundays.

As a 15-year-old, you must have at least 1 hour break for every 4 hours worked. You also have to take a 2-week break from school and working once a year.

15-Year-Old Working Laws

15-year-old working laws means you’re limited to what types of jobs you can do. However, you should contact your local council and see what job restrictions there are – as some councils will allow you to work in a place that may otherwise be illegal. Check what your local bylaws says before starting any new job, just in case.

  • Legally, you are not allowed to work in these areas:
  • Workplaces like a factory or an industrial estate.
  • You cannot work in places like pubs and betting shops, or other workplaces that require at least the age of 18 to work there.
  • You cannot work in a place that may be harmful to your health or well-being.
  • You cannot work for more than 1 hour before school.

Remember to check with your local council before starting any new job – as some local bylaws will allow you to work for 1 hour before school. You do this contacting your local education department or education welfare service. You should also be aware that, because you’re still a child, you are not entitled to employment rights.

Pay Rate For A 15-Year-Old

The pay rate for a 15-year-old will vary from job to job. However, you are legally obliged to at least the minimum wage for your age group. The current minimum wage for a 15 -year-old is £4.81 an hour. If you start a job and you’re paid less than this an hour, your boss is breaking the law! Make sure the salary is at least £4.81 an hour before signing any new contract, and make sure you’re getting the correct amount per hour if you’re getting cash in hand.

What Is The Current Minimum Wage?

Each year, the UK government updates its minimum wage. These change each April. The current minimum wage is as follows;

If you’re an apprentice, different rules apply depending on your age and if you have completed the first year of your apprenticeship. This can be a little complicated, so read this carefully!

What are you going to do:

  • Babysitter

As a nanny or babysitter, you will provide childcare to various ages; you may need to complete CPR training, first aid and other basic childcare training. This job is done with no supervision from adults, so your maturity is a major factor. Perform domestic duties by preparing meals, bathing children and cleaning up after them.

  • Dog Walker & Pet Sitter

As a dog walker or pet sitter, some tasks include walking animals and providing you and the animal with much-needed exercise. This is a great way to learn about caring for animals, responsibility and building confidence. Handling animal waste and disposing of properly.

  • Café Server

You may take orders and serve food and drinks to customers’ tables. Your knowledge of items on the menu and recommend dishes that fit customers’ needs. You are more likely to work in cafés rather than restaurants as 15-year-olds are not allowed to serve alcoholic beverages are not. 

  • Kitchen Assistant or Porter

Your tasks with these jobs are performing simple kitchen tasks. Basic ingredient preparation, keeping surfaces clean and tidy. After the kitchen is closed, you may need to mop floors and dry utensils; these tasks need attention to detail and are fast-paced.

  • Shop Assistant

You can earn cash by working in a shop during the weekend. Gain vital skills in customer service, handling money and types of software. Helping customers find products, collecting payments and unpacking stock on the shop floor.
