Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology

Job Description:

The Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences and Sackler Institute of Translational Research is seeking to recruit a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in clinical psychology.  The post holder will undertake research, teaching and clinical work in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).  They will be attached (50%) to Neurodevelopmental Pathway – specialist service for adults with neurodevelopmental outcomes, including specialist assessment, treatment, training to other staff, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.


  • To assist the Programme Director in leading our Masters programme in Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences (CNS), including overall management of teaching and clinical placements, clinical and academic tutors and maintaining oversight of the various course components.
  • Develop proposals for high-quality research activity in translational studies (e.g. clinical trials) in neurodevelopment through a portfolio of independent, as Principal Investigator, joint and/or network research projects and to acquire grant funding for the same through project grants, fellowships, studentship funding, consultancy and other additional funds.  It is anticipated that the successful applicant would acquire/help acquire (as a PI or co-applicant) research funding totalling not less than £300,000 within the first 5 years. Significant support will be given by the department to help achieve this goal.
  • The post-holder will have the unique opportunity to link in with a number of projects.  For example, some of our current projects investigating infant brain development; its association with variation in cognitive and behavioural phenotype, and factors that modulate ‘risk’ vs ‘resilience’ in infants who are at high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. autism and/or ADHD). There are also other opportunities to link to ongoing work funded by major EU, MRC, NIH and Wellcome Trust grants in both children and adults examining offending behaviour, psychopathy, inhibitory behaviour, ADHD, OCD, risk for psychosis, and autism.  This work is ‘back translated’ to animal and cellular models via our newly funded MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental disorders, and ‘forward translated’ to proof of concept and clinical studies via collaborations with the Centre for Developing Brain and the Sackler Institute. ‘Pump priming’ funds will be available from the Sackler Institute to help the successful candidate launch their research work.

Skills and Experience:

  • [All grades] Doctoral level qualification in clinical psychology e.g. DClinPsy
  • [Senior Lecturer] PhD
  • Post-qualification training in specialised area of psychological practice in working with adults who have ASD and/or ADHD, and significant mental health or behavioural difficulties (via formal post qualification training or a                              combination of specialist short courses, or an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice.
  • Ability to develop students, trainees and junior colleagues
  • Record in attracting research grant income, studentships and/or fellowships
  •  Supervision of post-graduate students
  • [All grades] Registered with HPC as a Practitioner Psychologist and evidence of continued professional development
  • Ability to write high quality peer reviewed research publications and funding applications
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialized psychological assessments and interventions for adults with ASD and advanced knowledge of psychological assessments and clinical psychometrics
  • Expert knowledge in relevant research areas including psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis
  • Capacity to build and maintain relationships and work effectively with colleagues within and across organizations.
  • Promise of strong research reputation as evidenced by international quality peer reviewed publications.
